On leaving the army, WG Mitchell established WG Mitchell Sacks which was set up in Newham, Truro. The business involved collecting hessian sacks from farms all over the county, which had been used for corn and grain transportation, before cleaning and repairing them to be resold to farmers for the next harvest.
A few profitable years later, WG Mitchell decided it was time to move to larger premises. The business was relocated closer to the centre of Truro to the ‘people’s palace’, which was a very large stable-type building that was originally used for keeping the town horses. The larger premises accommodated around 9 machinists for sack repair; 3 sack cleansers; and 3 drivers for collecting and delivering the repaired or used sacks.
A few years later, the business needed even larger premises to accommodate the staff, machinery and expanding stock. WG Mitchell moved to Benson Lodge, which was located on the other side of Truro. The new premises were converted into a purpose-built works, including separate rooms for the machinists and cleansers.
We enjoyed further expansion, as we began supplying grain bags for nearly all the local mills in the county. An extra store was required, so a location in Green Bottom was purchased, where stores were constructed to house the harvest sacks.
WG Mitchell retired from the sack business. It was then taken over by current owner, Paul Mitchell, who moved the entire business to its current location at Green Bottom just outside Truro.
Harvey Mitchell joined with a view to running and expanding the future business.
